Most people know about the 4Cs—Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat weight—which help judge a diamond’s quality. But those are just the basics. There are a few other things that also affect how a diamond looks and what it’s worth.

Here’s what to keep in mind:

1. FluorescenceSome diamonds glow under UV light. This is called fluorescence.

  • In some cases, strong fluorescence can make a diamond look slightly cloudy.
  • In lower color grades, it might actually help the diamond look whiter.

It’s not good or bad—it depends on the diamond. Always check how the diamond looks in different lighting.

2. Diamond TreatmentsSome diamonds are treated to improve how they look.

  • Laser drilling removes dark spots inside.
  • Fracture filling hides cracks by filling them with a material.

These treatments can make the diamond look better, but they may also affect its value and durability . Always ask if the diamond has been treated.

3. Symmetry and Facet Alignment - Diamonds have small flat surfaces called facets. If these aren’t properly aligned, the diamond won’t reflect light well—even if it has a good cut grade. Better symmetry usually means better sparkle.

4. Proportions Matter - Details like the angle of the crown and pavilion - (the top and bottom parts of the diamond), and the thickness of the girdle (the edge around the diamond), all affect how the diamond handles light. Even a diamond with a high cut grade can look dull if these proportions are off.

5. Internal Features - Some diamonds have growth lines or internal graining. Even if the clarity grade is high, these natural features can sometimes make the diamond look hazy or less bright. That’s why it’s always a good idea to see the diamond in person or under different lighting.

Don’t stop at just the 4Cs. Ask questions. Look closely. A diamond’s beauty is about more than just numbers—it’s also about how it looks to you.
