THE 4C’S

Buying a diamond? Whether it's for an engagement ring or a special piece of jewellery, it's important to know the 4Cs. These four things— Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat—help you understand the quality and value of a diamond.

Let’s break them down in an easy way:

1. Cut The cut of a diamond affects how much it shines. It’s not about the shape (like round or oval), but about how well the diamond has been cut and polished. A well-cut diamond reflects light beautifully and gives you that stunning sparkle.

Cut Grades:
  • Excellent: Super sparkly, reflects almost all light.
  • Very Good: Still very sparkly, slightly less than excellent but more affordable.
  • Good: Reflects some light, less shine.
  • Fair/Poor: Looks dull, doesn’t sparkle much.

Tip: If you love sparkle, go for Excellent or Very Good cut.

2. ColorDiamonds come in different shades, but the best ones are colorless. The less color a diamond has, the more valuable it is.

Color Grades (D to Z):
  • D–F: Colorless – top quality, very rare.
  • G–J: Slightly tinted – warm tone, noticeable in bigger diamonds.
  • K–M: Reflects some light, less shine.
  • N–Z: More color – not usually used in fine jewellery.

Tip:G–J range gives you a clean look without the high price.

3. ClarityNo diamond is 100% perfect. They all have tiny marks called inclusions (inside) or blemishes (outside). Clarity tells you how many of these flaws are present.

Clarity Grades:
  • FL / IF (Flawless): No flaws even under magnification.
  • VVS1–VVS2:Tiny flaws, very hard to spot.
  • SI1–SI2: Some flaws, visible under magnification.
  • I1–I3: Obvious flaws, can affect sparkle.

Tip:VS and SI diamonds are good choices—they look clean and cost less.

4. CaratCarat is the weight of the diamond, not the size. One carat = 0.2 grams. Bigger diamonds are rarer, which makes them more expensive.

Popular Carat Sizes:
  • 0.50 ct: Small and budget-friendly
  • 1.00 ct: Classic and elegant
  • 1.50–2.00 ct: Bold and luxurious
  • 2.00+ ct: Rare and valuable

Tip:Choose a carat size based on your style and budget—but don’t forget cut, color, and clarity also affect price.

Bonus C: Certification = Confidence

Always buy a diamond with a certificate from a trusted lab like GIA or IGI. This gives you proof that what you're buying has been properly checked and graded.

Knowing the **4Cs—Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat—**helps you choose the right diamond with confidence. You don’t need to go for the highest grade in everything. Instead, look for a balanced diamond that fits your style, sparkle preference, and budget.

A little knowledge goes a long way in picking a diamond you’ll love forever:
